Metal Artist Nick Sochaski – Building the future from our past

Nick Sochaski is a Metal Artist / Sculptor residing with his wife Katie in Waldheim, Saskatchewan Canada. His use of upcycled and recycled steel parts from around the province, as well as the incorporation of stone and wood, invoke a certain “connection” both to the earth as well as to the piece itself.

His love for the outdoors, as well as his creative nature, started at a young age. Nick is a self-taught artist, yet his background in design, engineering and fabrication has helped him bring all these skills into his everyday outlook on his artistic nature.

“My studio is where the world melts away. I simply start bending and twisting to see where it leads me. I find it very humbling to be called an artist”

While they spend lots of time at various Art Shows and markets, one of the highlights is always speaking with people about the thoughts and processes related to the pieces and their creation. Whether it is a large or small piece, the same attention to detail is seen throughout.

Our Process

Here at Sochaski Designs Metal Artistry, we combine many processes to achieve our end results; these processes are, but not limited to:

  • Welding and Braising

  • Plasma and torch cutting

  • Blacksmithing / Forging

  • Sheet Metal Working

  • Airbrushing, Painting & Coatings

  • Its hard to say as each piece is different. Most pieces are based on an hourly rate including materials. Some take longer than expected, some take shorter. It all works out though in the end.

  • Honestly, im self taught for most things. You learn by failing. My family is full of Fabricators and Welders so ive picked up things here and there. Whereas i may not be doing everything 100% correct to some people, it works for me while still achieving the high caliber of construction that our patrons have come to expect.

  • Honestly, it has always been the Deer Mount. I knew nothing of forging and very little about manipulating metal at that point. It was a great challenge for me, and everyone seems so amazed that there are only pipes, spoons and rebar in it. Lately ive been challenging myself more and more, so pieces like the Jose Jalapeño Statue is a close 2nd because making a face was a daunting task.
